nielashandNick Craig-Wood abae66ee1a accounting: fix memory leak from stats groups on long-running rcd
Before this change, `NewStats` stored the context it was created from on the
`StatsInfo`. Stats groups are never freed -- they are only evicted once there are
`--max-stats-groups` of them -- so each one kept its context, and everything reachable
from it, alive for the life of the process. As the rc creates a group per call,
that included the call's filters and their compiled regexps.

The context was only ever used to get `ci.StatsFileNameLength` from the config.
`StatsInfo` already stores that same `*fs.ConfigInfo`, read from the same
context in `NewStats`.

This change fixes the issue by passing the stored ci to `transferMap.String` and
dropping the context from `StatsInfo`.

nielashandNick Craig-Wood 71a0932126 accounting: fix memory leak on long-running rcd
Before this change, Transfer.Done closed the account of a completed transfer but
never released it, because it assigned nil to only a local copy of the pointer.
As a result, every completed transfer continued to reference its account.

An Account holds the transfer context and the source reader, and the stats keep
completed transfers around up to `MaxCompletedTransfers` per group, with groups
discarded only at --max-stats-groups. On a long-running `rclone rcd`, this adds up.

It was noticeable when running bisync repeatedly via the rc, where the transfer
context carries `b.WriteResults` (bisync's `LoggerFn`). A `*bisyncRun` holds
Path1 and Path2 listings, which can be quite large, and are not supposed to be
retained between runs. (Naturally they aren't, when running bisync on the
command line -- which is probably why we didn't notice this issue sooner.)

This change fixes the issue by releasing `tr.acc` in Done, instead of the local
copy. `tr.Snapshot` reads the byte counts off the account, so the progress is
recorded on the transfer first. That read happens before taking `tr.mu`, because
`acc.progress()` locks `acc.values.mu`, `checkReadBefore` holds that lock while
calling `StatsInfo.GetBytes`, and `StatsInfo` locks back into `Transfer` in
`Transferred` and `_removeTransfer`.

nielash 387b4b5e11 bisync: fix memory leak when running via the rc
Before this change, `fastCopy` created a cancellable context for the sync and
stored its cancel func on the `bisyncRun`, but only ever called it when
gracefully shutting down. On a normal run, it was never called, and until it is
cancelled, a context from `context.WithCancel` stays registered with its nearest
cancellable ancestor.

For an rc job, that ancestor is the job's own context, which the job registry
retains for `--rc-job-expire-duration`. The sync context carries bisync's
`LoggerOpt`, whose `LoggerFn` is a method value on `*bisyncRun`, so a finished
run was kept alive -- including the Path1 and Path2 listings -- for as long as the
job was.

This change fixes the issue by cancelling the sync context when `fastCopy`
returns. The cancel func is still stored on the `bisyncRun`, so a graceful
shutdown can still interrupt a sync that is in progress.

nielash 35752d0079 bisync: fix --conflict-loser pathname with --conflict-resolve newer
Before this change, --conflict-loser pathname assumed --conflict-resolve none,
following the legacy behavior prior to v1.66. This produced unexpected behavior
when used with a different --conflict-resolve option.

This change fixes the issue by ensuring that --conflict-loser pathname looks for
the correct name on the side not being renamed, when only one side should be
renamed.

nielash d541caa52b local: fix rmdir "Access is denied" on windows - fixes #8363
Before this change, Rmdir (and other commands that rely on Rmdir) would fail
with "Access is denied" on Windows, if the directory had
FILE_ATTRIBUTE_READONLY. This could happen if, for example, an empty folder had
a custom icon added via Windows Explorer's interface (Properties => Customize =>
Change Icon...).

However, Microsoft docs indicate that "This attribute is not honored on
directories."
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/fileio/file-attribute-constants#file_attribute_readonly
Accordingly, this created an odd situation where such directories were removable
(by their owner) via File Explorer and the rd command, but not via rclone.

An upstream issue has been open since 2018, but has not yet resulted in a fix.
https://github.com/golang/go/issues/26295

This change gets around the issue by doing os.Chmod on the dir and then retrying
os.Remove. If the dir is not empty, this will still fail with "The directory is
not empty."

A bisync user confirmed that it fixed their issue in
https://forum.rclone.org/t/bisync-leaving-empty-directories-on-unc-path-1-or-local-filesystem-path-2-on-directory-renames/52456/4?u=nielash

It is likely also a fix for #8019, although @ncw is correct that Purge would be
a more efficient solution in that particular scenario.

nielash fd1665ae93 bisync: fix error handling for renamed conflicts
Before this change, rclone could crash during modifyListing if a rename's
srcNewName is known but not found in the srcList
(srcNewName != "" && new == nil).
This scenario should not happen, but if it does, we should print an error
instead of crashing.

On #8458 there is a report of this possibly happening on v1.68.2. It is unknown
what the underlying issue was, and whether it still exists in the latest
version, but if it does, the user will now see an error and debug info instead
of a crash.

nielash d915f75edf bisync: fix chunker integration tests
Before this change, TestChunkerS3: tests were failing because our use of
obj.Remove (for "modtime_write_test") created an unexpected extra transfer.

This is because chunker calls operations.Move for removes, which (per its
function comment) is supposed to be only accounted as a check. But because S3
can Copy but not Move, the move falls back to copy and ends up getting counted
as a transfer anyway.
https://github.com/rclone/rclone/blob/99e8a63df2528e4fd470821095cbeb32e8a827a3/fs/operations/operations.go#L506
https://github.com/rclone/rclone/blob/99e8a63df2528e4fd470821095cbeb32e8a827a3/fs/operations/copy.go#L381

This is probably a bug that should get a more proper fix in operations. But in
the meantime, we can get around it by doing our "modtime_write_test" with its
own unique stats group.

nielash 26b629f42f bisync: fix koofr integration tests
Before this change, koofr failed certain bisync tests because it can't set mod
time without deleting and re-uploading. This caused the "nothing to transfer" log
to not get printed where expected (as it is only printed when there are 0
transfers, but koofr requires extra transfers to set modtime.)

This change fixes the issue by ignoring the absence of the "nothing to transfer"
log line on backends that return `fs.ErrorCantSetModTimeWithoutDelete` for
`obj.SetModTime`.

nielash d2916ac5c7 bisync: ignore expected "nothing to transfer" differences on tests
The "There was nothing to transfer" log is only printed when the number of
transfers is exactly 0. However, there are a variety of reasons why the transfer
count would be expected to differ between backends. For example, if either side
lacks hashes, the sync may in fact need to transfer, where it would otherwise
skip based on hash or just update modtime. Transfer stats will also differ in
the "src and dst identical but can't set mod time without deleting and re-
uploading" scenario (because the re-upload is a transfer), and where --download-hash
is needed (because calculating the hash requires downloading the file, which is
a transfer).

Before this change, these expected differences would result in erroneous test
failures. This change fixes the issue by ignoring the absence of the "nothing to
transfer" log where it is expected.

Note that this issue did not occur before
https://github.com/rclone/rclone/commit/9e200531b1490000656031c42fff4d95477e1b46
because the number of transfers was not getting reset between test steps,
sometimes resulting in an artificially inflated transfers count.

nielashandNick Craig-Wood d4edf8ac18 bisync: release from beta
As of v1.71, bisync is officially out of beta.

Some history:

- bisync was born in 2018 as https://github.com/cjnaz/rclonesync-V2
by @cjnaz, written in python.
- In 2021, @ivandeex ported it to go with @cjnaz's support.
https://github.com/rclone/rclone/pull/5164
- It was introduced as an "experimental" feature in v1.58.
https://github.com/rclone/rclone/commit/6210e22ab585eccdf27c12642d342056459e2e6e
- In 2023, bisync needed a new maintainer, and @nielash volunteered.
https://forum.rclone.org/t/bisync-bugs-and-feature-requests/37636
- Later in 2023, bisync received a major overhaul and was relabeled "beta"
(from "experimental"). https://github.com/rclone/rclone/pull/7410
- In 2024, integration tests were introduced for bisync (which previously had
only unit tests). https://github.com/rclone/rclone/pull/7693
- As of August 2025, bisync is stable and integration tests are passing on all
of the "flagship" backends.

Development doesn't stop here, of course. But bisync has come a long way since
its "experimental" days, and the "beta" tag is no longer needed.

nielash fc5bd21e28 bisync: fix time.Local data race on tests - fixes #8272
Before this change, the bisync tests were directly setting the time.Local
variable to UTC.

The reason for overriding the time zone on the tests is to make them
deterministic regardless of where in the world the user happens to be. There are
some goldenized strings which have the time zone hard-coded and would result in a
miscompare failure outside of that time zone.

However, mutating the time.Local variable is not the right way to do this, as OP
correctly pointed out on #8272.

Setting the TZ environment variable from within the code was also not an ideal
solution because, while it worked on unix, it did not work on Windows. See
https://github.com/golang/go/blob/fbac94a79998d4730a58592f0634fa8a39d8b9fb/src/time/zoneinfo.go#L79-L80

This change fixes the issue by defining a new bisync.LogTZ setting for use when
printing timestamps in /cmd/bisync/resolve.go. We override this on the tests
instead of time.Local.

nielash be73a10a97 googlecloudstorage: fix rateLimitExceeded error on bisync tests
Additional to googlecloudstorage's general rate limiting, it apparently has a
separate limit for updating the same object more than once per second:

googleapi: Error 429: The object rclone-test-
demilaf1fexu/015108so/check_access/path2/modtime_write_test exceeded the rate
limit for object mutation operations (create, update, and delete). Please reduce
your request rate. See https://cloud.google.com/storage/docs/gcs429.,
rateLimitExceeded

We were encountering this in the part of the bisync tests where we create an
object, verify that we can edit its modtime, then remove it. We were not
encountering it elsewhere because it only concerns manipulations of the same
object -- not the rate of API calls in general. For the same reason, the standard
pacer is not an effective solution for enforcing this (unless, of course, we
want to slow the entire test down by setting a 1s MinSleep across the board.)

While ideally this would be handled in the backend, this gets around it by
sleeping for 1s in the relevant part of the bisync tests.

nielash 2a587d21c4 azurefiles: fix hash getting erased when modtime is set
Before this change, setting an object's modtime with o.SetModTime() (without

The documentation notes: "If this property isn't specified on the request, the
property is cleared for the file. Subsequent calls to Get File Properties won't

nielash 4b0df05907 bisync: disable --sftp-copy-is-hardlink on sftp tests
Before this change, TestSFTPOpenssh integration tests would fail due to setting
copy_is_hardlink=true in /fstest/testserver/init.d/TestSFTPOpenssh.

For example, if a file was server-side copied from path1 to path2 and then the
bisync tests set the path2 modtime, the path1 modtime would also unexpectedly
mutate.

Hardlinks are not the same as copies. The bisync tests assume that they can
modify a file on one side without affecting a file on the other. This change
essentially sets --sftp-copy-is-hardlink to the default of false for the bisync
tests.

nielashandNick Craig-Wood 0eb7ee2e16 sync: fix testLoggerVsLsf when backend only reads modtime
There are some backends (like PikPak) that advertise a precision of
fs.ModTimeNotSupported but do actually return a modtime when asked. In the case
of PikPak, it is because the modtime can be read but not written, and is not
considered reliable enough to use for syncing.

Before this change, testLoggerVsLsf got confused in this scenario (expected a
blank modtime but got non-blank). Adding to the confusion, it only reaches this
code if the backend happens to support md5 hashes, and the fsrc and fdst have
the same precision.

This change fixes the issue by setting the modtime string on both sides to
"none" in this scenario. Note that we can't use "" (blank) because
(operations.ListFormat).AddModTime would replace that with "2006-01-02 15:04:05".

nielashandNick Craig-Wood 013c563293 lib/transform: add transform library and --name-transform flag
lib/transform adds the transform library, supporting advanced path name
transformations for converting and renaming files and directories by applying
prefixes, suffixes, and other alterations.

It also adds the --name-transform flag for use with sync, copy, and move.

Multiple transformations can be used in sequence, applied in the order they are
specified on the command line.

By default --name-transform will only apply to file names. The means only the leaf
file name will be transformed. However some of the transforms would be better
applied to the whole path or just directories. To choose which which part of the
file path is affected some tags can be added to the --name-transform:

file	Only transform the leaf name of files (DEFAULT)
dir	Only transform name of directories - these may appear anywhere in the path
all	Transform the entire path for files and directories

Example syntax:
--name-transform file,prefix=ABC
--name-transform dir,prefix=DEF

https://github.com/rclone/rclone/commit/5f70918e2c867e0bf8c4ff38b34960738dbd4883
introduced a new INFO log when making a directory, which differs depending on
whether the backend supports setting directory metadata. This caused false
positives on the bisync createemptysrcdirs test.

This fixes it by ignoring that log line.

nielashandNick Craig-Wood 3b49fd24d4 bisync: fix listings missing concurrent modifications - fixes #8359
Before this change, there was a bug affecting listing files when:

- a given bisync run had changes in the 2to1 direction
AND
- the run had NO changes in the 1to2 direction
AND
- at least one of the changed files changed AGAIN during the run
(specifically, after the initial march and before the transfers.)

In this situation, the listings on one side would still retain the prior version
of the changed file, potentially causing conflicts or errors.

This change fixes the issue by making sure that if we're updating the listings
on one side, we must also update the other. (We previously tried to skip it for
efficiency, but this failed to account for the possibility that a changed file
could change again during the run.)

nielash 11ad2a1316 bisync: allow blank hashes on tests
Some backends support hashes but allow them to be blank. In other words, we
can't expect them to be reliably non-blank, and we shouldn't treat a blank hash
as an error.

Before this change, the bisync integration tests errored if a backend said it
supported hashes but in fact sometimes lacked them. After this change, such
errors are ignored.

nielash 3c7ad8d961 box: fix server-side copying a file over existing dst - fixes #3511
Before this change, server-side copying a src file over a dst that already exists
gave `Error "item_name_in_use" (409): Item with the same name already exists`.

This change fixes the error by copying to a temporary name first, then moving it
to the real name.

There might be a more graceful way to overwrite a file during a copy, but I
didn't see one in the API docs.
https://developer.box.com/reference/post-files-id-copy/
In the meantime, this workaround is better than a critical error.

nielashandNick Craig-Wood 9b4b3033da fs/cache: fix parent not getting pinned when remote is a file
Before this change, when cache.GetFn was called on a file rather than a
directory, two cache entries would be added (the file + its parent) but only one
of them would get pinned if the caller then called Pin(f). This left the other
one exposed to expiration if the ci.FsCacheExpireDuration was reached. This was
problematic because both entries point to the same Fs, and if one entry expires
while the other is pinned, the Shutdown method gets erroneously called on an Fs
that is still in use.

An example of the problem showed up in the Hasher backend, which uses the
Shutdown method to stop the bolt db used to store hashes. If a command was run
on a Hasher file (ex. `rclone md5sum --download hasher:somelargefile.zip`) and
hashing the file took longer than the --fs-cache-expire-duration (5m by default), the
bolt db was stopped before the hashing operation completed, resulting in an
error.

This change fixes the issue by ensuring that:
1. only one entry is added to the cache (the file's parent, not the file).
2. future lookups correctly find the entry regardless of whether they are called
with the parent name or one of its children.
3. fs.ErrorIsFile is returned when (and only when) fsString points to a file
	(preserving the fix from https://github.com/rclone/rclone/commit/8d5bc7f28b8459a0e04fdbfd2dca43c5d9ec4555).

Note that f.Root() should always point to the parent dir as of https://github.com/rclone/rclone/commit/c69eb84573c85206ab028eda2987180e049ef2e4

nielashandNick Craig-Wood 462a1cf491 local: fix --copy-links on macOS when cloning
Before this change, --copy-links erroneously behaved like --links when using cloning
on macOS, and cloning was not supported at all when using --links.

After this change, --copy-links does what it's supposed to, and takes advantage of
cloning when possible, by copying the file being linked to instead of the link
itself.

Cloning is now also supported in --links mode for regular files (which benefit
most from cloning). symlinks in --links mode continue to be tossed back to be
handled by rclone's special translation logic.

nielash 956c2963fd bisync: don't convert modtime precision in listings - fixes #8025
Before this change, bisync proactively converted modtime precision when greater
than what the destination backend supported.

This dates back to a time before bisync considered the modifyWindow for same-side
comparisons. Back then, it was problematic to save a listing with 12:54:49.7 for
a backend that can't handle that precision, as on the next run the backend would
report the time as 12:54:50 and bisync would think the file had changed. So the
truncation was a workaround to anticipate this and proactively record the time
with the precision we expect to receive next time.

However, this caused problems for backends (such as dropbox) that round instead
of truncating as bisync expected.

After this change, bisync preserves the original precision in the listing
(without conversion), even when greater than what the backend supports, to avoid
rounding error. On the next run, bisync will compare it to the rounded time
reported by the backend, and if it's within the modifyWindow, it will treat them
as equivalent.

nielashandNick Craig-Wood 87ec26001f local: add server-side copy with xattrs on macOS (part-fix #1710)
Before this change, macOS-specific metadata was not preserved by rclone, even for
local-to-local transfers (it does not use the "user." prefix, nor is Mac metadata
limited to xattrs.) Additionally, rclone did not take advantage of APFS's native
"cloning" functionality for fast and deduplicated transfers.

After this change, local (on macOS only) supports "server-side copy" similarly to
other remotes, and achieves this by using (when possible) macOS's native APFS
"cloning", which is the same underlying mechanism deployed when a user
duplicates a file via the Finder UI. This has several advantages over the
previous behavior:

- It is extremely fast (even large files can be cloned instantly)
- It is very efficient in terms of storage, as it automatically deduplicates when
possible (i.e. so that having two identical files does not consume more storage
than having just one.) (The concept is similar to a "hard link", but subsequent
modifications will not affect the original file.)
- It preserves Mac-specific metadata to the maximum degree, including not only
xattrs but also metadata not easily settable by other methods, including Finder
and Spotlight params.

When server-side "clone" is not available (for example, on non-APFS volumes), it
falls back to server-side "copy" (still preserving metadata but using more disk
storage.) It is only used when both remotes are local (and not wrapped by other
remotes, such as crypt.) The behavior of local on non-mac systems is unchanged.

nielashandNick Craig-Wood 8470bdf810 s3: fix 405 error on HEAD for delete marker with versionId
When getting an object by specifying a versionId in the request, if the
specified version is a delete marker, it returns 405 (Method Not Allowed),
instead of 404 (Not Found) which would be returned without a versionId. See
https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/userguide/DeleteMarker.html

Before this change, we were only looking for 404 (and not 405) to determine
whether the object exists. This meant that in some circumstances (ex. when
Versioning is enabled for the bucket and we have a non-null X-Amz-Version-Id), we
deemed the object to exist when we should not have.

After this change, 405 (Method Not Allowed) is treated the same as 404 (Not
Found) for the purposes of headObject.

nielash 2bebbfaded bisync: add to integration tests - fixes #7665
This change officially adds bisync to the nightly integration tests for all
backends.

This will be part of giving us the confidence to take bisync out of beta.

A number of fixes have been added to account for features which can differ on
different backends -- for example, hash types / modtime support, empty
directories, unicode normalization, and unimportant differences in log output.
We will likely find that more of these are needed once we start running these
with the full set of remotes.

Additionally, bisync's extremely sensitive tests revealed a few bugs in other
backends that weren't previously covered by other tests. Fixes for those issues
have been submitted on the following separate PRs (and bisync test failures will
be expected until they are merged):

- #7670 memory: fix deadlock in operations.Purge
- #7688 memory: fix incorrect list entries when rooted at subdirectory
- #7690 memory: fix dst mutating src after server-side copy
- #7692 dropbox: fix chunked uploads when size <= chunkSize

Relatedly, workarounds have been put in place for the following backend
limitations that are unsolvable for the time being:

- #3262 drive is sometimes aware of trashed files/folders when it shouldn't be
- #6199 dropbox can't handle emojis and certain other characters

nielashandNick Craig-Wood 9b650d3517 hasher: look for cached hash if passed hash unexpectedly blank
Before this change, Hasher did not check whether a "passed hash" (hashtype
